This free online character counter gives you real-time statistics as you type or paste text. It counts characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words, and estimates reading time at 200 words per minute.

Platform limits are shown for Twitter/X (280), LinkedIn posts (3,000), SMS (160 per message), Instagram captions (2,200), YouTube descriptions (5,000), and Meta/Facebook posts (63,206). The bar turns red when you approach or exceed the limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Twitter count characters differently?+
Twitter counts most characters as 1, but URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of length. Emoji count as 2 characters each. This tool shows raw character count.
How is reading time calculated?+
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute — the average adult reading speed. Academic or technical content may take longer to read.
What counts as a sentence?+
Sentences are counted by splitting on sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?). This is an approximation — abbreviations like "Dr." may be counted as sentence endings.
Is there a character or word limit?+
No limit at all. You can paste entire documents, articles, or books — the counter handles any length of text.
